“I gave the ring back,” I tell Vern. I’ve stopped by on the way home. Danny’s game is long over.

“What’d you tell our esteemed comptroller?”

“That tomorrow morning, I’ll draw up an arrest warrant for Heyman Weymouth based on the statement of a confidential informant who witnessed the attack. That’ll keep Landon Gauss’s name out of it, at least until Heyman’s apprehended. After that, we’ll see how it goes.”

“No protection if it means a killer goes free?”

“None at all.”

We’re standing on the porch, me feeling guilty. If I come inside, I’ll have to spend time with Emmaline and I just don’t have the energy. I want home, Danny, Zoe, and a glass of wine. Not to mention dinner and a late-night backrub.

“Landon took it well,” I add.

“He was grateful?”

“We could’ve made him a scapegoat, but this way is better. Three murders in the last week? Bad. Already solving one? Good. And if the media decides we’ve got the crime wave under control, even better.”

“For how long?”

“With Boomtown unpoliced? Until the next atrocity.”

“Like a war between Charlie’s crew and the bikers?”

“Yeah, like that.”
